420-Friendly California Accommodations

Most California hotels ban cannabis. These do not. From Victorian B&Bs with edible welcome baskets to desert resorts with CBD massages, here is where to stay when cannabis is part of your trip.

The Hotel Problem

California legalized cannabis in 2016, but the hospitality industry has been slow to follow. The overwhelming majority of hotels, motels, and major chain properties explicitly prohibit cannabis use on their premises — smoking, vaping, and often even edible consumption. Violating hotel cannabis policies can result in cleaning fees of $250 or more, and many properties enforce these policies aggressively.

The disconnect is real: you can legally purchase cannabis at thousands of dispensaries across the state, but finding a legal place to consume it as a visitor requires planning. The options below represent properties that have openly embraced cannabis-friendly policies.

San Francisco & Bay Area

  • Hotel Kabuki (Japantown, SF): This Japantown boutique hotel offers a "Herbal Trip" package that includes curated cannabis products, a vaporizer, and wellness amenities. The hotel's Japanese-inspired aesthetic and onsen-style soaking tubs make it a natural fit for cannabis relaxation. Vaping and edibles permitted in designated rooms; no smoking
  • Noe's Nest (Noe Valley, SF): A Victorian bed & breakfast in one of San Francisco's most charming neighborhoods. The property provides edible welcome baskets for cannabis guests, allows indoor edible consumption, and maintains a private garden where smoking is permitted. Intimate and personal — the owners are genuinely cannabis-friendly, not just tolerant

Los Angeles & West Hollywood

  • Moment Hotel (West Hollywood): A boutique hotel on Sunset Boulevard with a rooftop lounge area where cannabis consumption is permitted. The rooftop offers views of the Hollywood Hills and is within walking distance of WeHo's consumption lounges including The Original Cannabis Cafe and The Artist Tree. The hotel leans into WeHo's cannabis-forward culture

Beyond the Moment, West Hollywood's concentration of consumption lounges means even visitors staying at non-cannabis-friendly hotels can walk to a lounge for their consumption experience and return to their hotel afterward.

Desert & Palm Springs

The desert region has become the most cannabis-accommodating lodging market in California:

  • O Resort & Spa (Desert Hot Springs): The standout cannabis-friendly resort in Southern California. Starting at approximately $79 per night, the property features natural mineral hot spring soaking pools, CBD massage services, and explicitly cannabis-friendly rooms and outdoor areas. The resort has built its identity around the wellness-and-cannabis crossover. Desert Hot Springs' mineral waters add a dimension no other cannabis accommodation can match
  • Desert Hot Springs Inn: A smaller, more intimate property in Desert Hot Springs that openly welcomes cannabis guests. Outdoor consumption areas and a relaxed atmosphere make it popular with visitors exploring the Coachella Valley's dense dispensary landscape
Desert Hot Springs

Desert Hot Springs has quietly become California's most cannabis-friendly city for visitors. Multiple hotels and resorts welcome cannabis, the city has numerous dispensaries, and the natural mineral hot springs create a unique wellness experience. It is 15 minutes from Palm Springs and 45 minutes from the Coachella festival grounds.

Mountains & Rural

  • Hicksville Pines Bud & Breakfast (Idyllwild): A collection of themed cabins in the San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs. Each cabin has a distinct personality — retro, Western, psychedelic — and the property is explicitly cannabis-friendly with outdoor fire pit areas for consumption. The mountain setting and quirky aesthetic make it one of the most memorable cannabis accommodations in the state. Book well in advance; the property is popular and has limited capacity

Booking Platforms for Cannabis-Friendly Stays

Several platforms specialize in connecting cannabis consumers with friendly lodging:

  • BudandBreakfast.com: The largest cannabis-friendly lodging platform. Lists properties across California that explicitly permit cannabis use, with filters for smoking, vaping, and edible policies. Think of it as the Airbnb for cannabis travelers
  • HiBnB.com: A newer platform focused on cannabis-friendly vacation rentals and unique stays. Growing California listings, particularly in Northern California and the desert
  • Inndica: Cannabis-friendly hotel and B&B booking platform. Smaller inventory but curated for quality — every listed property has verified cannabis policies

Airbnb & Vacation Rentals

Airbnb does not have an official "420-friendly" category, but many hosts include phrases like "420 friendly," "cannabis welcome," or "smoking allowed outdoors" in their listing descriptions. Tips for finding cannabis-friendly Airbnbs:

  • Search for "420 friendly" in the listing description (use the keyword search, not the main search bar)
  • Look for properties with outdoor spaces — private patios, gardens, or balconies where smoking is more likely to be permitted
  • Message the host directly before booking to confirm their cannabis policy. Do not assume
  • Read recent reviews for mentions of cannabis-friendliness
  • Consider booking entire homes rather than shared spaces — hosts of entire-home rentals are generally more permissive

General Tips for Cannabis-Friendly Stays

  • Always confirm before booking. Policies change. Even properties listed on cannabis-friendly platforms may update their rules. A quick message or phone call saves headaches
  • Respect smoking boundaries. "Cannabis-friendly" does not always mean "smoke anywhere." Many properties distinguish between indoor and outdoor smoking, designated areas, and edible/vape-only rooms
  • Be a good guest. Cannabis tourism is new, and property owners who welcome it are taking a risk with their neighbors and insurance companies. Leave the space clean, do not disturb neighbors, and make it easy for the host to continue their cannabis-friendly policy for the next guest
  • Consider edibles and vapes. If your lodging situation is uncertain, edibles and vape pens are discreet, odorless (or low-odor), and eliminate smoking-related concerns entirely
